國際光年台灣區首場巡迴演講暨揭幕式於2015年1月9日臺大光電論壇盛大舉辦。2013年聯合國在第六十八屆大會會議中，決定宣佈 2015 年為國際光年(International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies IYL 2015)。
